SP 4: Fruits and vegetables value chain

Fruit and vegetables are valuable commodities in African food markets, but some species are particularly vulnerable to PHL.

In SP 4, will develop maturity indicators and measurement tools, and identify fruit and vegetable varieties with excellent post-harvest quality performance. Furthermore, we will work on options for system diversification, such as intercropping, to better balance production year round, and develop innovative processed products from such systems.

RELOAD is characterized by its comprehensive approach to reducing PHL, with activities channelled through seven subprojects (SP 1–7). These address agricultural and food value chains from different angles. Commodity-based research is combined with cross-cutting themes. For the meat and dairy value chains, the policy framework that governs these sectors will be described and analyzed for its implications for different actors, and policy decision-makers and regulatory authorities will be involved in stakeholder platforms to jointly identify needs and options for change, so that losses can more effectively be reduced.
